Profile
Taylor G. Petrey came to Kalamazoo College in 2010. He received his graduate training in New Testament and Early Christianity from Harvard Divinity School. He has been the Lucinda Hinsdale Stone Assistant Professor of Religion, the director of the Women, Gender, and Sexuality Program, and is currently the chair of the Religion department at Kalamazoo College. In 2016-17, he was a Research Associate and Visiting Associate Professor of Women’s Studies and Sexuality at the Women’s Studies at Religion Program at Harvard Divinity School.
Dr. Petrey’s books include Resurrecting Parts: Early Christians on Desire, Reproduction, and Sexual Difference (Routledge, 2015), The Routledge Handbook of Mormonism and Gender (Routledge, May, 2020), Tabernacles of Clay: Sexuality and Gender in Modern Mormonism (University of North Carolina Press, June, 2020) and is editor of Re-Making the World: Christianity and Categories: Essays in Honor of Karen L. King. He has published numerous articles in journals such as Harvard Theological Review, Early Christianity, and the Journal of Early Christian Studies. He has written numerous pieces for popular media. Dr. Petrey is currently the Editor of Dialogue: A Journal of Mormon Thought.
Dr. Petrey teaches courses on the Bible and biblical interpretation, early Christianity, ancient Judaism, and theory and method in the study of religion. His research focuses on gender and sexuality in religion, especially in ancient Christianity and in Mormonism.
